Allen County Prosecutor discusses local impacts of statewide deputy prosecutor shortage

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Allen County Prosecutor Michael McAlexander says he was raised on the idea that the state is always ready to go to trial, and he holds on to that principle despite a statewide shortage of deputy prosecutors.

The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council says Indiana needs 40% more deputy prosecutors, equivalent to more than 400 attorneys. The shortage made headlines recently when Howard County Prosecutor Mark McCann moved to dismiss a murder case, citing “a significant and ongoing staffing crisis.”

Howard Superior Court Senior Judge William Menges dismissed the case last week, leaving the potential of refiling the charges at a later date on the table, according to online court records…
