Third windiest spring ever was warmer and drier than average

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The arrival of June means that Meteorological Spring is in the books and we say hello to Meteorological Summer! Before we do though, let’s take a look back at a windy spring that was warmer and drier than average…

Remember, meteorologists divide the seasons into three month blocks for record-keeping purposes. Meteorological Spring is March, April, and May. Meteorological Summer is June, July, and August.

The biggest headline from Meteorological Spring 2025 was that it was windy! Using our average wind gust data, we ended up recording the third windiest spring ever, with reliable wind data in Fort Wayne dating back to 1941. This does include the windiest March ever by average wind gust. Only 2022 and 1968 recorded a windier spring…

The wind sent in enough warm air for it to be the 17th warmest spring in Fort Wayne’s history, with weather records this time dating back to 1897. Our highest temperature of the spring was 86° on May 16th and our lowest temperature was 14° back early in the spring on March 2nd. We ended up above our average spring temperature by 1.7°.

Turning to precipitation, it was a drier than average spring. We added up 9.21 inches of precipitation, which is good for the 49th driest spring in Fort Wayne’s history. In fact, our total was 1.92 inches below average, making this spring the driest in three years. It was also significantly drier compared to last year’s spring, when we picked up a whopping 15.93 inches of precipitation.

We really lacked in the snowfall department this spring. We only picked up 0.3 inches of snow. This was below average by 5.1 inches and ranks in a tie for the 7th least snowy spring on record. This means we did not pick up a three inch or more snowfall yet again, meaning we’ll wait until the fall or longer to break our longest ever streak without one.

Looking ahead to the three summer months, chances are we’ll end up above average in the temperature department, but our chance is lower compared to other parts of the country. We also have equal chances for above or below average precipitation, according to the Climate Prediction Center.
