Sober Ride Indiana offers Uber and Lyft discounts for holiday weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) is offering discount vouchers for rideshares during the Fourth of July weekend to reduce the frequency of impaired driving.

Independence Day weekend is among the highest ranking deadliest holidays for traffic-related fatalities of the year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). During last year’s holiday period, 34 individuals lost their lives in crashes in Indiana, and nine of those involved driving under the influence.

“Driving under the influence puts lives at risk,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Institute. “Planning ahead for a safe, sober ride is one of the simplest, most effective ways to protect yourself and others on the road.”

A program run by ICJI, Sober Ride Indiana, is offering $10 off Uber and Lyft rides to prevent impaired driving July 3-7. For rides that begin or end in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, up to 1,000 free credits are available and valid through the hours of 5 p.m. and 3 a.m…
