Auburn fire near I-69 deemed intentional, 2 minors charged with arson

AUBURN, Ind. (WANE) — The Auburn Police Department released a statement on Wednesday stating that the fire that took place at an Auburn playground near I-69 was set intentionally by two minors.

On July 3, DeKalb County first responders received a call at 3:44 p.m. reporting a large fire at a play ground near Auburn Crossing Mobile Home Park. After extinguishing the fire around 3:52 p.m., the Auburn Police Department, with assistance from the Indiana Fire Marshals Office, began a joint investigation.

Investigators discovered that two juveniles arrived at the playground at around 3:30 pm on July 3 and ducked underneath a plastic playset. One of the two minors lit two notecards on fire with a cigarette lighter and placed them into a cylinder next to the plastic, intending to melt the plastic, according to APD.
