ADAMS CO., Ind. (WANE) — Saturday’s crash involving a horse-drawn vehicle, or buggy, is one that the Adams County Sheriff’s Department sees, on average, once a month.
“Drivers are protected by the car,” Sheriff Dan Mawhorr said. “[If you saw] pictures of the last [crash], that buggy was basically obliterated. When people get ejected from the buggy, they get hurt.”

Mawhorr said the Amish community makes up about 15,000 people in the county’s population of 35,000. Rain or shine, day or night, many of them use open-air buggies, or buggies without a roof or doors, to get around.
“On the county roads, they’re everywhere,” Mawhorr said. “You get south of State Road 124 in Adams County, the probability of you seeing an Amish buggy on the roadway is almost 100%.”…
