Swatting, when a phone call could mean jail time

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — According to the Federal Protective Service, swatting is a “malicious act that can involve placing false emergency calls to emergency responders, often reporting a false, sever and ongoing crisis at a specific location.”

WANE 15 spoke with Fort Wayne Police Department Sgt. Jonathan Cutler Thursday morning following recent swatting calls at universities nationwide.

These calls can be made to provoke a response from law enforcement, creating chaos and potentially resulting in violence. False reports can range from reports of active shooters, bomb threats, or hostage situations targeting individuals, business, schools and other organizations…
