FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A new initiative launched Tuesday and hopes to spotlight the success of Hoosiers who have run – and won – as independents.
“In 2023 and 2024, 244 independent candidates qualified for partisan races,” said Independent Indiana executive director Nathan Gotsch. “More than half of them, 52 percent, won. Those results point to something real happening in Indiana politics.”
A press release pointed to the electoral success of independents, including Huntington Mayor Richard Strick, Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis, and Lewisville town councilmember Tom Saunders.
The new group also cited an analysis by the Independent Voter Project, which used findings from L2-Data, showing nearly 44 percent of registered Indiana voters are independents, compared to 31 percent of Republicans and 25 percent of Democrats…
