Sept. 3 – Finding a ‘unique to Fort Wayne’ solution for homeless encampments

FORT WAYNE — Fort Wayne City Councilmen Russ Jehl, R-2nd, and Scott Myers, R-4th, last week delivered a letter to city attorney Malak Heiny was was focused on local homeless encampments and what could be done about them.

The letter asked for a review regarding the legality of homeless encampments in Fort Wayne. Further, the letter asked about several strategies that might be effective in addressing local encampments.

Mayor’s initial response

An initial statement from Mayor Sharon Tucker’s office highlighted how she is working with leadership representatives throughout the city to address homelessness. At the time of her selection as mayor last year, Tucker was executive director of Vincent Village, a transitional homeless shelter for families.
