Central Ohio commission, other communities commit $650K to Midwest rail project

OHIO — Multiple cities and commissions, including the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, is committing $650,000 in local funds to help develop a passenger rail corridor that would connect several Midwest cities together, according to a press release from MORPC.

MORPC, the City of Fort Wayne, Ind. and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission are the groups putting forth the funds toward the Midwest Connect project. It would connect more than 500 miles of land, from Chicago to Pittsburgh with stops in Columbus, Ohio and Fort Wayne.

The commitment has been submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration for the project. About $400,000 of the local match came from Buckeye State communities.

“Once built, this project would provide a valuable transportation connection and bring new economic development opportunities for residents along this route. Re-establishing this four-state corridor would invest in both urban and rural communities, enhance connectivity and create thousands of full-time jobs while strengthening the region’s service, manufacturing, and tourism industries.”…
