Fort Wayne’s 2026 salary plan impacts police, fire, and animal care

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — The Fort Wayne City Council is set to review the 2026 Public Safety salary ordinance. This ordinance establishes the salary grid for non-bargaining positions within the city’s Division of Public Safety, including Police, Fire, Animal Care & Control, and the Consolidated Communications Partnership.

The ordinance locks in job classifications and titles, requiring Common Council approval for changes unless they result from collective bargaining agreements. The salary grid, detailed in Exhibit A, sets pay ranges from Grade 0 to Grade 18, with exceptions for certain pay categories like shift differentials and educational bonuses.
