I&M warns against ‘phantom energy use’

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Indiana Michigan Power is sharing tips to help customers avoid “phantom energy use.”

Phantom energy is when electronics or appliances are draining energy while not in use. Examples include TVs, computers, phone chargers and washing machines still using electricity because they are plugged in but not being actively used.

The power company has a few suggestions to curb phantom energy use, such as:

  • Unplug electronic devices while they are not in use;
  • Use an advanced power strip;
  • Replace inefficient appliances; and
  • Track energy use.
