Local organization asking for help as SNAP benefits set to start running dry Saturday if government shutdown continues

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A nonprofit organization in Allen County is asking for the community’s support with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits set to begin running dry Saturday if Congress doesn’t reach a deal by then to end the U.S. government shutdown.

Wellspring Interfaith Social Services says individuals and families who depend on SNAP benefits are already coming to them in record numbers to make sure they have food on their tables.

“This morning, the number of clients we served in the Wellspring food bank tripled,” said the organization in a news release on Wednesday. “Yesterday, we took extra food to one of our mobile pantry sites, and we still ran out of food.”…
