Police: Speed, phone use lead to DeKalb County crash with critical injuries

DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A Fort Wayne man was critically injured early Friday morning after crashing his SUV in DeKalb County.

Around 3 a.m., deputies responded to County Road 40 near the Noble County line on reports of a vehicle in a ditch with smoke coming from the engine, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators determined speed was a factor in the crash; the driver also admitted to using his phone while driving, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 38-year-old was taken to the hospital, where medics determined he had a fractured spine and partial paralysis in his right leg…
