Fire officials warn of winter fire hazards

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — As colder weather moves into Fort Wayne, firefighters say typically, more people turn to space heaters and other alternative heat sources, and with that comes an increase in risk.

Assistant Chief Jonathan Flickinger, who oversees Community Risk Reduction for the Fort Wayne Fire Department, said one of the biggest concerns is residents trying to warm their homes in ways that can be harmful.

“One of the challenges we run into a lot of times is people are trying to heat their homes in ways that they should not,” Flickinger said. “Opening their stove and leaving it running just to get warmth throughout the house.”…
