Bluffton ex-officer, coroner charged with domestic battery, felonies

WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — An off-duty Bluffton police officer who also serves as the Wells County Coroner was arrested Monday and is charged with domestic battery as well as two other felonies.

After his partner came forward, 49-year-old Clifford Thomas was officially charged with domestic battery (a misdemeanor), strangulation (a level 6 felony), and pointing a firearm at another (a level 6 felony). He was released on bond, but on Friday, he was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and for invasion of privacy.

His domestic partner went to the police on Nov. 6 after he allegedly lifted her off her feet by her neck and threw her to the ground. In the court documents, she says that he fell on top of her and “put his fist in her face.” She said she thought her spine was going to break.

In the court documents, it says that Thomas had threatened to kill himself with a gun more than once, then threatened to kill her, saying the “trigger pulls so easily.”…
