Fort Wayne bakery to pay fired worker $50K for ADA violation

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WANE) The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has settled a lawsuit involving alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by a Fort Wayne wholesale bakery.

According to a press release issued by the EEOC, Holsum of Fort Wayne had a policy which prohibited the use of personal items in the production area of its bakery. However, in August of 2022, a supervisor allowed an employee to bring a walker into the area.

A year later, the bakery told the employee she could no longer use the walker because it violated the personal items policy, despite the employee’s claim she needed the walker because of her disabilities. Holsum then forced the woman to take medical leave and according to the EEOC, she was fired a few month later because she was unable to return to work without the walker…
