Charges filed for man who fled fatal Bluffton crash

WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — A man has been initially charged with multiple felony counts after fleeing the scene of a fatal head-on crash in Bluffton.

Juan Jiminez Gomez, 19, of Bluffton was arrested Saturday morning after a large-scale, multiple-agency search was conducted to locate him.

Criminal charges were filed against Gomez in Wells County, and his preliminary charges are listed as follows:

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident resulting in death, Level 4 felony.
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Level 6 felony.
  • Operating a Vehicle without a license resulting in death, Level 5 felony.
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident resulting in bodily injury, Class A Misdemeanor.
  • Burglary, Level 5 felony.
  • Criminal Trespassing on an agricultural operation, Class A Misdemeanor.
  • Battery, Class B Misdemeanor.

The crash took place on Saturday at about 5:53 a.m. near State Road 218 and County Road 700 E in Bluffton. The Wells County Sheriff’s Office detailed in a press release the crash report between a van and a 2013 GMC Terrain.

When first responders arrived, the driver of the van was pinned inside. First responders began life-saving measures, but the driver succumbed to their injuries.
