Fort Wayne, nonprofits team up to provide emergency shelters for winter

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Multiple local agencies have teamed up with the city to provide safe housing for unhoused families during the winter months.

In a press release from the city, six agencies along with the help from Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing and Neighborhood services, have come together to create a winter contingency/emergency shelter plan that will go into effect December 1 and run through March 31, 2026.

The plan is the first of its kind to provide 24/7 access to warm and safe housing for Fort Wayne families in need. The additional hours are part of a partnership with Blue Jacket, which will provide staffing for the Winter Contingency Emergency Shelter at The Salvation Army.
