First Alert Forecast: Tracking freezing fog & next rounds of snow

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – We’re giving you the First Alert as freezing fog develops in some spots this morning, greatly reducing visibility at times and bringing the potential for more slick spots. Luckily, many schools are running on a delay or virtual learning this morning which will help keep traffic at a minimum for the start of Monday. Visibility can be low as a quarter mile or less at times. Light moisture in the fog can freeze on surfaces, causing a very thin glaze of ice. While (as of 5 am) there have been no reports so far of road hazards, be extra cautious as you’re traveling and encounter any of these patches of freezing fog. Temperatures this morning are down in the teens, making for a very chilly start to the day.

Fog will mix out going into the late morning/ early afternoon. We’ll remain cloudy for the rest of the day as our next round of snow shapes up. A few scattered snow showers are possible this evening during the PM drive, but snow will pick up overnight. This snow won’t be quite as impressive as the past weekend, but there could still be some slippery roads due to a fresh coating of snow. Snowfall totals will range from 1-3″ across the region into early Tuesday morning. Most snow looks to be out by the peak of the Tuesday morning commute, but your Tuesday morning routine may be delayed due to lingering snow on roads, that’s why we’ve issued Tuesday morning as a First Alert Weather Day. It’s a good idea to set your alarms a bit earlier on Tuesday and keep an eye out for school delays.

Your Next First Alert: It’s a busy week with multiple ‘minor nuisances’ in the forecast. We’ll see ANOTHER light chance for snow by the second half of Wednesday, looking to be up to and under 1″ of snow. Looking in a longer range, there’s the chance for a weather system over the weekend to bring widespread snow but there’s much uncertainty regarding that so far. We’ll keep you updated on the weekend snow chance as we get closer and see that narrow in in our data. Besides just snow this week, it’ll be very cold! Wind chills by the tail-end of the workweek could reach the single digits and even slip below 0 by the early morning hours…
