‘Poor and distasteful’: Butler officials search for answers after cemetery damaged

BUTLER, Ind. (WANE) — The Butler Police Department is asking for information after “several headstones” were found damaged at Butler Cemetery Sunday, Dec. 7.

According to a press release, the incident happened sometime between 3:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. when an unknown vehicle entered the cemetery along County Road 28 and left the cemetery drive just west of the mausoleum.

Butler Mayor Mike Hartman noted on Facebook that one headstone was chipped and another was knocked off its base.

Butler police have not identified a suspect or suspect vehicle. Police Chief Matthew J. Traster said the incident may have been an accident but that failing to notify authorities was not only illegal, but also a “poor and distasteful” decision…
