Fort Wayne Mayor to prioritize homeless shelter before state casino decision

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Should Fort Wayne wait to build a homeless shelter until the state decides whether or not a casino could come to Allen County? While the two things may seem entirely unrelated, these two structures are at the heart of a letter WANE 15 independently obtained on Monday.

“Homelessness is one of my top priorities,” wrote Mayor (D) Sharon Tucker to Fort Wayne City Council in a Dec. 19 letter. “Unfortunately, municipal governments do not have many tools for addressing this issue.”

The city’s plan

To address these issues, the city has been moving towards building a new homeless services center, first presented to the public in October of this year.

“Since early September my administration has issued an RFP (request for proposals) for the operation of a day shelter. We also began evaluating sites for the day shelter,” continues Tucker’s letter. “The acquisition and rehabilitation of the day shelter is estimated to be $3.8M.”…
