Northwest Fire District replaces rig used in St. Mary’s Church fire

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — The sun has set on a longtime fire truck that has been used to protect Allen County citizens for more than three decades.

Northwest Fire District, which serves Huntertown along with Eel River, Perry and Washington townships, placed a new rig in service, replacing the previous truck that got its start in 1991. The fire truck started out with the former St. Joe Township Fire Department before coming to Huntertown in 2014.

While the vehicle was still operational, Northwest Fire District Chief Robert Boren said it was well past time for the department to find a replacement.

“The actual life expectancy of a piece of apparatus is anywhere between 10 to 20 years. Actually, after 10 years you’re supposed to take the truck off the front line, and it’s supposed to go into reserve status,” Boren said. “After you get to the 20-year point, you’re supposed to retire the rig.”…
