Downtown Fort Wayne expands boundaries to 2 historic areas

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Downtown Fort Wayne’s boundaries have expanded, a growth that the district fostered when going through the reauthorization process.

The district’s north side used to stop at the St. Marys River. Now, the Wells Street corridor has been added to downtown’s map. To the west, a longer section of Broadway is now part of the district as well.

According to the website, “State statute requires signatures from property owners representing more than 50% of the non-residential property and more than 50% of the non-residential real property value to be renewed to authorize a commercial district.”

The new extension north of the river ends at Elizabeth and Putnam streets. To the west, downtown ends at Sherman Boulevard/ Van Buren Street; the southwest corner of downtown now goes down to Taylor Street at Broadway. As before, the southern edge goes just beyond Baker Street and the east side of downtown ends at Clay Street…
