FWPD: Copper thefts are almost ‘impossible’ to identify

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Precious metals are on the rise as the futures for gold and silver continue to soar.

While it might not make your engagement ring anytime soon, another metal’s value is also on the rise.

“I can remember when copper was over $10 a pound,” said Joseph Lyon, detective with the FWPD. “It’s creeping back up… so it’s lucrative, and you know if you’re stealing it, it’s worth money.”

And as scrap yards in Fort Wayne see sales of copper increase, so do concerns about criminals flipping stolen copper…
