Fort Wayne eyes zoning change to help revitalize a south side corridor

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— The City of Fort Wayne is beginning the process of rezoning much of the properties along South Calhoun St.

The city’s Community Development Division wants to change many of the commercial lots that are currently C3 into what is called “urban corridor” (UC) zoning.

According to city officials, UC is a zoning classification that allows for and encourages mixed uses with a focus on neighborhood-oriented commercial and personal services. The classification is relatively new (developed in the early 2000s) and is the result of collaboration with local business associations.

“It allows for mixed use,” Russ Garriott, Senior Planner for Fort Wayne Planning and Policy, said. “So you can have residential, like in an upper story of a commercial building, and retail on the first floor.”…
