Application approved for new Fort Wayne charter school that drew community debate

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The University of Southern Indiana (USI) has approved the application for a new charter school in Fort Wayne that has drawn opposition from the community.

USI approved Williams Arts and Technology Academy’s (WATA) application on Wednesday, allowing a three-year term for the charter school to serve K-3 students starting in 2027.

WATA is expected to serve about 120 students in its first year, with class sizes capped at 15 students. The school will also be tuition-free, emphasize arts and technology, and use a non-graded instructional model…
