Indiana offering rebates for tornado safe rooms

(WPTA) – The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is accepting applications for rebates on tornado safe rooms, offering homeowners up to $5,000 to install the hardened structures on their property.

The department says each year about 800 tornadoes are reported nationwide, causing 80 deaths and 1,500 injuries.

According to the IDHS website, a safe room is a hardened structure specifically designed to meet FEMA criteria and provide “near-absolute protection” in extreme weather events. The rooms can survive winds as high as 250 miles per hour.
