Construction crews have broken ground on a $58.4 million revamp of Cromwell Marine Creek Road , a patchy and chronically clogged 2.1-mile street cutting through a crowded suburban section of far north Fort Worth.
Much of the road accommodates only one lane of traffic in each direction. The city has cordoned off the parts with two lanes, channeling cars into tight strips lined with cones; but, as of Friday afternoon, it has yet to close any intersections.
City officials hope to double the road’s lane count, install sidewalks, street lights and traffic signals, and rebuild a bridge over Marine Creek by the fall of 2026.
Developers built out hundreds of single-family homes on either side of Cromwell Marine Creek beginning in the early 2000s, straining its capacity. The street also ferries commuters between Boat Club Road and Marine Creek Parkway.
The 2021 Tarrant transportation bond pumped $13.9 million into the project; the city’s 2022 bond roughly matched it, with a $10.7 million investment. Revenue from transportation impact fees will also help bankroll the undertaking. Construction, headed by national construction company Sundt, accounts for most of the costs ($44.8 million).
