Fort Worth-based lab recalls eye drops over deadly fungal contamination

A company based out of Fort Worth has their eye drops recalled over fungal contamination reports.

A nationwide recall is in effect for “Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra SPT, Single Vials On-the-Go” due to fungal contamination. The packaging is a cardboard carton with lot number 10101 and an expiration date of September 2025.

The FDA announced that Alcon Laboratories, based out of Fort Worth, initiated the recall after a consumer found a foreign material in a sealed vial, it was later identified as fungal in nature. The drops, sold in 25-count packages, are being pulled from shelves out of caution.

Alcon advises those who bought it to return it and to reach out to medical officials if any health problems arise. Meanwhile, Alcon Laboratories is notifying all of its distributors to replace all of the recalled products.

The FDA shared that fungal contamination could lead to serious eye infections if left untreated. It could result in partial vision loss, blindness, and in a worse-case. scenario death.
