Catholic schools hope for improved enrollment as private school voucher bill awaits Governor Abbott’s signature

DALLAS — After a historic vote Thursday, the private school voucher bill will head to Governor Greg Abbott’s desk. In recent months, WFAA spoke to various public-school districts about their concerns for the program, but there has been little response from schools that could directly benefit.

Lawmakers said private schools have a choice in whether or not to participate in the program, but many anticipate Catholic schools will. WFAA spoke with Bishop Michael Olson, Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth.

Bishop Olson said enrollment at Catholic schools has declined nationwide. For the Diocese of Fort Worth, he said they are a little over 60% capacity in all their schools, particularly those in the inner city…
