Fort Worth’s Southside Welcomes ‘Hands of Unity’ Mural with I.M. Terrell Academy and Community Involvement

Southside’s community canvas is getting a fresh coat of collaboration, as the Palette Program has kicked off the ‘Hands of Unity’ mural project at 1000 Lowden St. Students and educators from I.M. Terrell Academy aren’t just painting by numbers; they’re orchestrating an artistic expression of togetherness, with the support of the Palette Program—the city’s answer to graffiti, turned art cultivator. For six months, brains have been storming and concepts fermenting, leading up to the mural’s concept, which, like a visual group hug, symbolizes connection and the strength found in unity.

Residents weren’t sidelined in this artistic play—they’ve had their say and even snapped pics of their hands clasping objects that reek of meaning and personal tale, which artists are now translating into the mural’s design; it’s all about local vibes and voices shaping the aesthetic dialogue. The project is tipping its brush to past creativity too, transforming a canvas first colored by artist Jo DuFo over a decade ago, with the students leading the charge into fresher, vibrant visuals that speak to today’s Southside stories.

As per the Fort Worth City News, Margo Gordon, Program Coordinator for the Park & Recreation Department, was buzzing with pride as district superintendents joined Park Operations bigwigs to lay down the literal groundwork, saying, “We officially broke ground on Oct. 16, with the help of Park Operations supervisors and district superintendents, who painted over the previous mural to prepare a clean foundation for the new artwork.” Gordon doubled down on her kudos to the student artists, “The students have amazing talent, and I am happy that our program has the platform to display it.”…
