Hurst Chase Ends In Loop 820 Standoff As Toll Lanes Grind To A Halt

A 33-year-old Hurst man wound up in handcuffs today after a high-speed chase crashed to a stop on westbound Loop 820 near Holiday Lane in North Richland Hills, snarling traffic and triggering a tense roadside standoff. Officers had chased the white sedan through Hurst and Bedford before it finally came to rest on the toll lanes. Police say the driver refused to follow commands at first, then eventually climbed out of a car window and was taken into custody and booked at the city’s joint detention facility.

Traffic Backs Up As Police Swarm Toll Lanes

State traffic cameras and drivers reported heavy backups on the westbound express lanes as officers blocked at least one lane near Holiday Lane. The Dallas Morning News reviewed footage that showed officers clustered around a white sedan near the concrete median and reported that the scene caused significant delays on the toll road.

Drone Spots Suspicious Moves Before Beanbag Rounds

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, police drone video captured the driver leaning back in the seat with his hand inside a backpack while officers tried to talk him out of the car. The outlet reports that officers fired beanbag rounds during the standoff. After the man was taken into custody, a firearm was found inside the backpack.

Police also told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that they called off the high-speed portion of the pursuit once the car entered the Loop 820 toll lanes because of safety concerns.

Suspect Booked, Charges Still Pending

CBS DFW reports that the man was taken into custody after the crash and was being processed by North Richland Hills officers. Authorities said charges are pending and that the suspect’s name will be released after he appears before a judge.
