(KRON) — An 18-year-old driver had just finished an overnight work shift at Amazon when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a motorcyclist in East Palo Alto, killing the rider, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Julian Adame Jr., 18, of Kingsburg, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death in connection with the fatal Aug. 20 collision. The Central California man made his first appearance in court Monday.
The motorcyclist was identified as Irma Elizabeth Oxlaj Vargas, 38, of Redwood City. According to prosecutors, Vargas was riding her motorcycle around 6 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 just south of the University Avenue exit when Adame dozed off and crashed his Acura TL into the back of her bike.
