A Peninsula restaurant family known for falafel and shawarma has traded flatbread for sandwiches. The Sandwich Guy, a new deli serving customizable hot and cold sandwiches, has opened at 2070 Broadway in Redwood City, run by the same family behind the Falafel Tazah chain.
The deli is owned by Louay Obeidi. Falafel Tazah’s first location opened in Redwood Shores in 2013 under founder Mo Obeidi, then expanded to Foster City in 2017 and San Carlos in 2020, according to Falafel Tazah. As reported by The Mercury News, Falafel Tazah now operates in San Carlos, Redwood City and Foster City, and Louay Obeidi said he expected opening the new deli would be easier than it turned out to be.
The Sandwich Guy has been open for about two months, per the same report, and Obeidi has found that running a deli demands seven-days-a-week in-person consistency along with an array of perishable fresh items that must stay stocked at all times. He and the shop’s one employee are now focused on expanding catering platforms and group orders, the Mercury News notes.
A Menu Built on Italian Cold Cuts and Boar’s Head
The shift marks a notable culinary departure for the Obeidi family.
