The San Francisco 49ers’ epic NFC Championship Game comeback against the Detroit Lions was historic not just for the margin of the deficit they overturned.
In coming back from 24-7 down to prevail 34-31, the 49ers matched their own record for the largest fightback in NFC title game history.
But their remarkable recovery effort also saw them set a new postseason benchmark as the 49ers took sole ownership of the record for the most playoff wins in NFL history.

The victory over the Lions marked the 49ers’ 38th playoff win, San Francisco moving clear of the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers on 37.
San Francisco will only care about that statistic if the Niners put further daylight between themselves and the chasing pack by knocking off the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58 to move to 39 wins.
With Kyle Shanahan as the head coach and a loaded roster, the 49ers are likely to continue adding to their tally in the years to come, but right now the focus is solely fixed on securing the sixth Super Bowl title that has eluded the franchise since its last Lombardi Trophy at the end of the 1994 season.
