At about 3:30 a.m., UCPD responded to the 33400 block of 14th Street on multiple reports of a “fully engulfed residence.” Officers arrived to find a “significant fire” and said they were able to evacuate most residents from the building.

“Unfortunately, a 66-year-old male resident was transported to a local hospital, where he later
succumbed to his injuries,” UCPD said.

Both a man and a woman were arrested in connection to the murder, but police said the woman, 57, has since been released. The current suspect, according to police, is Christopher Shawn Schwenk, 33, of Union City.

Police said they are “committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding this incident” and are asking anyone with information on the investigation to contact UCPD at (510) 675-5207.
