California transit agency Secures $25 Million State Grant to Transform Station into Housing

The North Berkeley BART Station is set for a major transformation after receiving a $25 million grant from California’s Cycle 7 Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP). Announced on October 24, 2024, by California Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin, the funds will be used for the North Berkeley Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Mobility Enhancements Project.

Key upgrades include new plazas, improved bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and a TOD parking garage. The project, which supports BART’s sustainability goals, will turn the station’s parking lot into housing and public spaces. BART estimates 739 new homes will be built, with half designated affordable housing, driving 750 new trips per day by 2031. The total project cost is $37 million, with additional local and state contributions.
