The Oakland Police Department celebrated the graduation of 24 new officers from the 194th Basic Recruit Academy at a ceremony at the Scottish Rite Center. Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell encouraged the graduates to build trust within the community. “You must go out of your way to mend and repair those relationships that need the most work,” he said.
Interim Mayor Nikki Fortunato Bas highlighted Oakland’s progress, with homicides down 35% and overall crime down 34% compared to last year. “We all deserve to feel safe,” she stated, emphasizing the city’s investment in public safety strategies.
The 194th Academy Class, including six women and 18 men, brings OPD’s total to 696 sworn officers, ready to serve and protect Oakland.
