Cigarette carton leads to arrest in cold case homicide after half a century

A thumbprint on a carton of cigarettes has led to an arrest nearly 50 years after a young California woman was strangled to death, officials say.

Jeanette Ralston was found dead in the back seat of her Volkswagen Beetle on February 1, 1977, in San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
