(KRON) — The City of San Jose has launched a new initiative using drone technology to trace and combat illegal fireworks activity in real-time — aiming to ensure a safer Fourth of July for the biggest city in the Bay Area, just days before what they call “one of the most high-risk times of the year.”

San Jose District Councilmember Bien Doan announced on Wednesday that the new pilot program employs Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to “gather video evidence and intelligence.” The program supports law enforcement in issuing citations against property owners illegally using fireworks through the Social Host Ordinance.
Only permitted public fireworks displays are allowed in San Jose, which boasts nearly one million residents.
“This is about using smart, efficient technology to keep our neighborhoods safe,” said Councilmember Doan. “Illegal fireworks are more than just a nuisance — they’re a danger to public safety. With this pilot program, we can take a proactive and data-driven approach to enforcement, while minimizing disruption to the community.”
