(KRON) — For some time, drivers who own hybrid or electric vehicles have been getting perks, like driving alone in carpool lanes and discounts to cross Bay Area bridges. However, in just a few months, inaction by the federal government means that the program and those perks come to an end.

When traffic is crawling along at 20 miles an hour, those with electric or hybrid vehicles with this requisite clear air sticker have been able to beat the congestion, even when driving alone, because they can use the HOV lanes. Not only that, but they’ve received discounts in express lanes and on state-owned Bay Area toll bridges.
But on October 1, the clean air vehicle decal program comes to an end, meaning all those perks go away because the Republican-controlled congress has not extended the program.
