Student Tip Stops Planned School Attack in Menlo-Atherton, Guns Found

Police in Menlo-Atherton swiftly locked down a high school and nearby middle school after receiving an alarming tip about a former student’s Instagram posts referencing an attack. Weapons were later recovered from the suspect’s home, averting what could have been another devastating school tragedy. The prevention marks yet another success for the Sandy Hook Promise organization, founded by a mother who lost her child in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Threat Detected on Instagram

On September 10, police received a report through the “Say Something” tip line about concerning Instagram posts from a former student. The posts displayed firearms, ammunition, and a mapped-out plan for an attack on Menlo-Atherton High School. Law enforcement quickly acted, locking down the campus and nearby middle school while locating the suspect.

Swift Police Lockdown

The lockdown lasted for about an hour as officers ensured the safety of students and staff. Once the suspect was identified, authorities detained the individual and confiscated weapons from their home. The incident is still under investigation, but officials stress that decisive action prevented potential loss of life.

Sandy Hook Promise’s Role

Nicole Hockley, whose 6-year-old son Dylan was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, co-founded Sandy Hook Promise to prevent similar tragedies.
