Contra Costa County DA Diana Becton Recall Effort Stalls Due to Lack of Signatures

The recall campaign targeting Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton has come to a halt, for the time being. After failing to submit the required signatures or a revised petition before the deadline, county officials confirmed the termination of the recall effort. This comes after accusations that Becton failed to properly seek justice for crime victims, a claim she has fervently disputed as politically motivated, designed to counteract the choice of the electorate, KTVU reports.

Despite the recent cessation of activities, Shane Reisman, who was involved with the recall efforts, indicated that the group is reevaluating its approach, focusing on paperwork, fundraising, and advertising. “It’s making sure we can do it and do it right and be successful,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle. The campaign, which initially began last March and underwent a restart in September, stumbled when their second petition failed to meet the “necessary requirements,” as county election officials disclosed.

However, before the cessation of the recall motion, some community members had indeed expressed strong concerns about Becton’s handling of specific cases. The notorious case of 24-year-old Alexis Gabe, found dismembered in 2022, became a focal issue for recall advocates, including Gabe’s own family.
