OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) — In the civil trial over the fatal police shooting of a 33-year-old father of two, attorneys for both the plaintiffs and defendants described what happened to the man as a “tragedy” before jury deliberations began in a federal court in California Wednesday.
Final witness testimony and more than two hours of closing arguments wrapped up a week of trial in the wrongful death case against the Redwood City police officer who shot Kyle Hart.
On Dec. 10, 2018, Redwood City police responded to a 911 call by Kyle Hart’s wife, Kristin, who explained her husband was cutting himself with a knife in an attempt to kill himself. After arriving at the Hart residence, officers Roman Gomez and Leila Velez saw Kristin Hart with a bloody shirt. She motioned to them that her husband was in the backyard with a knife.
