A Bay Area soccer star playing for the University of Washington women’s team died after battling a rare form of kidney cancer, the university’s athletics department said.
Mia Hamant — who previously played for Marin FC — died after dealing with Stage 4 kidney cancer. She was 21. Hamant attended Redwood High School and was from Corte Madera. At the start of the season, the university announced she’d sit out while battling the cancer. As a senior in high school, Hamant was a star player, earning several honors, including ranking third in the nation with a 0.882 save percentage, leading the Big Ten teams.
Marin FC said in a statement that they were deeply saddened by Hamant’s passing. “(Mia) was the heart of every team she played on, a captain, a leader and a friend who made everyone around her feel included.” The team is inviting its fans to wear orange ribbons, tape or pre-wrap in her honor and memory…
