Bay Area Residents Show Strong Support for 2026 Transit and Road Repair Tax Measure, Poll Finds

A poll conducted in October 2025 shows that most voters in five Bay Area counties support a proposed transportation sales tax measure for the November 2026 ballot. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) commissioned the poll, which EMC Research conducted. The survey included 2,800 voters from Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Francisco counties. According to the results, 56% of respondents would vote for the measure. The proposal aims to raise about $980 million each year for public transit and road repairs.

The tax would be authorized by state Senate Bill 63, which Governor Gavin Newsom signed. It would add a half-cent sales tax in four counties and a one-cent tax in San Francisco. The funds would be used to maintain transit services, improve safety and cleanliness, and provide financial oversight.

Support for public transit has increased since earlier polls. In October 2025, 84% of respondents said transit is important to the Bay Area, with 58% calling it very important.
