New ‘dark sky’ law would force homeowners to turn off their lights by midnight

A new law in California, titled the “Dark Sky” law, has reportedly gone under review, which would require homeowners to switch off their lights by midnight to protect local wildlife.

It was reported that the law is currently set to be reviewed by the Palo Alto City Council on Monday. Should it pass, it would impose a strict city-wide curfew, with most outdoor lights turned off at precisely midnight.

Under the new proposal, light trespass, or the unwanted glow spilling onto neighboring properties, would also be lowered from 0.5 to a mere 0.1 foot-candle. Reports confirm that the main priority of the proposal is the well-being of local wildlife…
