(KRON) — Work to remove the disused toll booths from the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is set to begin this month. The span is set to be the first of seven Bay Area bridges to be transformed as part of a multi-year conversion to Open Road Tolling (ORT).

The ORT conversion is intended to “streamline the driver experience,” according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), which manages the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and six other local spans. In addition to removing the toll booths, ORT conversion for the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge will involve installing overhead structures and equipment, and restriping the toll plaza to no longer require drivers to merge in and out of lanes at the plaza.
The changes, according to the MCT, will improve safety and commute times.
