Iconic 123-year-old retailer announces store closure as holiday shopping peaks

A major retailer announced Friday the closure of a popular California location as holiday shopping reaches full swing.

JCPenney confirmed it would be shutting down the store at Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton, California. This is the second JCPenney to shut down in the area, after facing another closure in May.

This comes as American Signature Inc., the parent company of American Signature Furniture and Value City Furniture, has filed for bankruptcy and announced the closure of 31 stores. Those closures are expected to be complete by January of next year.

Why is JCPenney closing in Pleasanton?

The JCPenney location was “unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market,” the company said in a statement to KRON 4.

The last day will be Feb. 22. As of now, it is unclear if employees will be transferred to other locations…
