Bright, colorful Geminid meteor shower thrills Bay Area spectators

The dark Bay Area sky provided a dramatic backdrop for a spectacular meteor shower late Saturday and Sunday nights into the wee hours of the morning.

The Geminid shower thrilled viewers with bright, colorful “shooting star” streaks, formed when meteor particles burned off in the atmosphere. The shower produced up to 120 meteors per hour.

Gerald McKeegan, an astronomer at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, recommended that observers lie or sit on the ground away from city lights to view the whole sky as meteors fell from several directions…
